After losing his parents as a boy, John Crowe is raised by his grandfather on the family farm. Learning to love the Lord and the land owned by his family for over 150 years, John grows up and decides to become a pastor. A tragedy forces him to drop out of seminary early, and he returns home to become a hard-working farmer with a quiet faith. When he's not caring for livestock or maintaining the ranch, John reads God's Word or attends church, where Jeremiah, a misguided preacher, seeks the available pastorate.
When the Sowers arrive in town, their attractive daughter, Ellen, catches the eye of both John and Jeremiah.
